The origin of fairy tales amplified with the Grimm Brothers who illustrated the gruesome barbaric and unsettling nature of evil. Modern day fairy tales outweigh evil with beauty. Fairy tales place unrealistic expectations on young children encouraging them to believe that one day someone will come and save them but that places an unrealistic sense of hope.
I aim to challenge the perspective of traditional wedding dresses into a diverse collection that ranges from pants suits, gowns, blazers, skirts, and cloaks that will provide more options to the modern woman. The integration of woven textiles with hair will provide an unexpected tactile component to the collection. Braided hair plays upon the connection to the Grimm Brother’s story about Rapunzel’s long hair that eventually is cut off. Hair is an extension of the human body and acts a shield but by chopping it off it can expose a person to feel vulnerable. Unexpected woven materiality can create a soft and structural texture to the looks in the line-up. The weaving textile samples use a combination of tulle, jersey knit, wool, yarn, and hair from wigs. The color scheme reflects ‘traditional’ ceremonial shades like white and black which with touches of blue accents which is created from the shibori dyeing technique samples. The color blue plays upon the phrase “Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue” which provides good luck to the wearer.
Weddings can be interpreted as modern day fairy tales. I explored my family history and discovered the transition from black to white gowns, distinctive styles, and traditions. I started my process by collection visual research and collaged them together to construct unexpected theatrical pieces. The light and dark draping process allowed for the initial design to be developing into three-dimensional shapes. Therefore, I aim to develop a collection that heightens beauty with the twisted dark narrative from original fairy tales to create a modern-day fantasy.
